Is Cuba Really That Menacing?

In the 60s it was indeed menacing with allowing the former Soviet Union to position nuclear missiles on the island. That was taken care of by President Kennedy during a very tense stand off.

The Soviet Union no longer exists and nuclear attacks from the island are, shall we say rather unlikely, since the nation is pretty much destitute.

The Castro's are not very likeable people and the island is still communist but we now have interactions with countries that were far more of a problem, and in the case of China certainly far more of a threat that Cuba ever was. We allow unfettered travel to Vietnam for instance and I would never suggest that we change that. Things change and there is no reason to keep alive a very onerous embargo on this poor island nation. We are hurting the people there fare more than the leaders by doing this.

Despite the fact that there are many people in positions of power or political clout in Florida that would have us never deal with Cuba through the end of time, we need to do what is right for the people.

Of course our politicians are not capable of doing what is right for our own people so I suppose it goes without saying that anyone else is pretty much screwed.

We All Need To Get On The Same Page

So today we still have Congress unable to come to terms with needed legislation. What we need to do is vote every single one of them out of there. When polls are taken there is always a majority of people that think term limits or getting all of Congress voted out is a great idea. Then when it comes to their Congressman the tone changes and we hear “Oh no! My Congressman is great and needs to stay.

This problem is not just one party. I will say that in large part it is the republicans causing this. Several of them have said that their sole purpose is to make sure that President Obama is not re-elected. The republicans are obviously hoping that we are all absolute idiots and won’t realize that all of this has been perpetuated by them.

The Democrats are not free of guilt in any way. When Harry Reid says that a bill from the house is dead on arrival it means that he will be playing games with the rules of congress to prevent it from ever being voted on. Legislation is supposed to be discussed so delaying a vote until discussions can happen is perfectly all right but to just refuse to allow it to come to a vote is just plain wrong. To the republican Legislators out there, get off your high horse and present something helpful instead of just causing problems.

The financial system has already full proven that it can not be trusted to work without heavy regulation so do it! Regulate the hell out of them.

To the banks. Get a grip and buy back a bunch of your stock from the idiots on Wall Street that are causing all this strife. I understand that any company goes into business to make money and I have no problem with that. I also have no problem with income inequality to a point. When it become obscene is where I have an issue. There was a time when executives made 50 to 60 times what the low end employees made and that is a fair number that I have no problem with.

My problem is with what we have today in many places. There are companies where the CEO or owner or whoever the controlling person is designated is making 1100 – 1200 times as much as the average rank and file member. That I have a major problem with.

Congress!! Listen up!! If you don’t address these issues your campaign contributions are going to dry up big time over the next 10 years or so. How do you expect these companies to send you money when the average worker will no longer be able to afford their products which will cause incomes to drop a lot.

Everyone please feel free to comment on this and pass it along to your friends whether they agree or disagree. I do not monitor my comments for content and look forward to a healthy discussion on this. I will however remove and posts that use obscene language. See if you can behave when commenting.

American Political Games

So we will very soon be in the throws of a hardcore political season as the primaries start in just over a month.

To everyone out there please vote for the people you think will do the most good. Please look at what they have done thus far before you vote.

I have been a registered Republican for my entire voting life and I am sickened by the crap that is going on in Washington. No one at all should be surprised that nothing has gotten better. We have a pretty fair sized group that have stated that their sole purpose is to see to it that  President Obama is a one term president. That is it. They have no interest in the country. They want the White House back in Republican hands.

There was a time that I would have wanted the White House in Republican hands as well but the latest crop of “Republicans” scare the hell out of me. I am not a big fan of taxes but under the circumstances we need to raise them to a point. We also need to cut spending dramatically but we can not, under any circumstances, cut taxes with the deficit that we are running.

At this point we do not need to raise taxes for new spending so much as we do pay for stuff we already bought.

We need to get companies to hire more and pay higher wages. The folks on Wall street who have never looked further than tomorrow will scream about that but think about it. People get hired and have paychecks and pay taxes. People in some cases get higher pay and pay taxes. And the brilliant thing about this is that they will also start spending money, which hikes the economy and companies are making more money again.

I don’t think it has occurred to many companies that if people keep getting paid less and getting laid off, at some there will not be many people to buy their products. See what Wall Street has to say to you when that happens.
